Foundation Achievement Standard Lesson 9 – Active And Healthy

INTRODUCTION FOR TEACHERS

Read through each song or rhyme with the students before you begin the activities.skipping_02

Use a whistle to stop students after 5 minutes at a station. They rotate from one activity to the next and have a water break every second rotation. If you have witches hats at each station, the students can line up behind the hat before they rotate to the next station.

PREPARATION

The students would benefit from knowing these rhymes before they begin using them in skipping and elastics games. They could be incorporated into handwriting activities, circle reading sessions, reading comprehension activities, writing their own jingles, substituting words in the jingles or spelling activities a week before this lesson is attempted. If not they could be incorporated into the English program the following week after the lesson is taught.

It is recommended you set these activities up each morning for a week or attempt every second day over 2 or 3 weeks.

Skipping can be performed as single skippers or pairs with ropes linked or as a small group with a handle tied to a pole and the other end worked by a student or teacher. Set up each station well away from the others to ensure the students are not whipping each other.

You will need to pre draw a chalk picture of a large banana with the words from the rhyme written in each of the 13 sections (see image below).

A pre drawn chalk picture of a salad bowl with any number from 3 – 6 written in each section (see image below).

Materials:

  • Copies of each rhyme enlarged to A3 and laminated to ensure they last for a few weeks
  • Blu tac to stick the rhymes to the walls or onto poles for students to read.
  • 1 whistle
  • Skipping ropes – 1 large rope tied to a post
  • One basketball per person at a station (up to 8 students could be at a station)
  • Bean bags x 8
  • Long chalk for drawing on the ground
  • A chalk picture of a large banana with the words from the rhyme written in each of the 13 sections on the ground
  • A chalk picture of a salad bowl on the ground, split into 4 sections with one number of either 3, 4, 5 or 6 written in each section.

One student starts in the rope and all students sing the rhyme until the students skipping stops the rope.skipping

If they are not able to skip at this stage then wiggle the rope on the ground and students run and jump over the rope one at a time and sing one word of the song each time someone jumps.

If they make it all the way through the song, without touching the rope, wiggle the rope faster next time.

Eat fruit and vegies every day

Then I’m well to run and play

STATION 5 - BEAN BAG TOSS

One bean bag per pair!

One student tosses the bean bag into the salad bowl drawn on the ground in chalk. The bowl is broken into four sections with number 3, 4, 5 or 6 written inside each section. When the student’s bean bag lands on a number they have to think of that many vegetables to tell their partner. Swap turns.
