Foundation Achievement Standard Lesson 1 – Unblocking Your Nose

• Download and print the BBC 11 Step Poster and display permanently in the room
• Download and print the Blowing Your Nose Song lyrics to display on the whiteboard
  
• Download and print the Breathing, Blowing, Coughing (BBC Program) action song lyrics
  
• One box of tissues or at least 6 per student. (Some students may need more or less, depending upon the blockage they are experiencing
• Bins – small boxes or containers sitting on the floor dispersed among the students
• They will need 2 tissues each for this game and a bin nearby.
• Explain the importance of having a clear nose to the students and that hearing loss may become permanent if they continue to have a blocked nose or slight hearing loss.
• Explain to the students that the idea of this game is to teach the students how to blow their nose properly and how to tell if it is blocked.

Jimmy Says Action Game – “How To Just Blow Your Nose” theme

Once you have been through the routine a number of times, then start adding incorrect instructions and ask the children which instruction you skipped. It is important they learn the routine.

Stop and explain the thumbs down kids need to do the routine again.

EVERYONE can start again at this stage but ask students to wash hands if clear nose OR repeat sequence if still blocked

Explain to the students that the idea of this song is to teach the students how to blow their nose properly and how to tell if it is blocked.

If they put thumbs up that in the song, they can breathe out and have a clear nose. If they put thumbs down in the song, they are still blocked and need to repeat the process.

Encourage the students to put their tissue in the bin as soon as they have blown both sides, (take the opportunity to discuss germs in their nose and “snot” holding germs, so it is important to place the tissue straight in the bin after they have blown both sides.)

Students drop out of the song once they have put thumbs up. Ask them to sit down or wash their hands whilst the others re-sing the song.

You can start again with the whole class if students are still blocked after two songs. The aim is for them to know how to blow their nose properly and the routine to unblock their nose, don’t forget tissue in the bin and wash hands at the end.

(Teacher sings, students echo each line. One tissue per person is required each time the song is sung.)

A bin is also necessary.
A number of small, temporary bins dispersed throughout the students would be ideal.
