Healthy Challenge
INTRODUCTION FOR TEACHERS
A note may be sent home prior to this lesson with the score board attached to assist students in planning a healthy lunch
OR
The lesson could be run without warning. Then followed up with a note home to ask students to plan a healthy lunch that will score higher than the initial score they calculated.
Those who have students receiving school lunches could use breakfast as the meal that is assessed and a breakfast planned at school to beat the score they received for breakfast on the day of this lesson
OR
The school provided lunch assessed and the students plan a lunch that scores higher. You could speak to the canteen manager about then serving one of the higher scoring lunches devised by the students.
Note to teacher: A similar lesson is being used in Band 1. It is important the students understand sometimes foods and why they are to be eaten only sometimes.

Print out the points system for each child or one per pair of students

The Healthy Meal Challenge Step 1
Students score their own lunch OR their whole lunch box, including recess.
Assign points for an item that is not on the scoring board. This may be done by the teacher or the group as a whole. (Feel free to keep adding items to the score board)
Optional: Add sometimes food to the list and assign 1 point.
LUNCH SCORING SYSTEM
10 point value foods include
- wholemeal or grainy breads, rolls and wraps
- vegetables and salads
- fruit
- meat, chicken, fish
- eggs
- cheese
- yogurt
- pasta, rice
- healthy dips
- water
5 point value foods include
- white breads, rolls and wraps
- peanut butter, vegemite etc
- healthy bars, slices, muffins etc
- plain crackers and biscuits
- fruit juice
ACTIVITY 2
The Healthy Meal Challenge Step 2
Students plan a lunch or a lunch box (including recess) that scores a set amount such as 50 points for just a lunch, 70 points for a lunchbox.
Extension: Can anyone design a lunch that scores exactly 100?

Healthy Lunch Boxes for House Points!
All students can help their team collect house points by enjoying a healthy lunch at school on

All classes will eat lunch with their buddies and older students will assist the younger classes to tally their lunch score.
Healthy foods have been allocated a point value which will be tallied and added to House Team scores.steamedfish_01
